Our Bowls & Plates collection brings the warmth of a Nepali ceramics workshop straight to your table. Each piece is individually thrown on a potter's wheel in Lalitpur — no two are identical, and that's exactly the point. These are working objects made with the care usually reserved for art.
Materials Used
- Clay body: stoneware or earthenware, sourced from Nepal's Terai region — each type noted per SKU
- Glazes: food-safe mineral glazes including cobalt blue, teal green, matte white, mustard, terracotta, and two-tone pour effects
- Firing: high-temperature kiln-fired for a dense, non-porous finish that holds up to daily use
- No synthetic coatings or additives — every glaze is food-safe and lead-free
- Sizes range from small sauce bowls (approx. 7 cm diameter) to large serving bowls (approx. 15 cm diameter)
Artisan Story
Behind every bowl is a potter who has spent years — often decades — refining their touch on the wheel. Our ceramic artisans work in Sana Hastakala's production facility in Ekantakuna, Lalitpur, where traditional Nepali pottery techniques meet contemporary tableware design. Many potters learned their craft from family members, carrying forward methods that predate the Malla dynasty. Today they adapt those same techniques for modern homes worldwide. The throwing, trimming, and glazing of each piece represents approximately 45 minutes of skilled labour from raw clay to finished product.
Fair Trade Impact
- Every artisan receives a verified living wage calculated against Nepal's actual cost of living — not just the national minimum
- Sana Hastakala has been a WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade member since 1989, with practices independently audited against 10 Fair Trade Principles
- Profits are reinvested into artisan training, health benefits, and community development in the Kathmandu Valley
- No middlemen: your order goes directly from the artisan's workshop to your home
- Consistent wholesale and export orders provide year-round employment, avoiding the seasonal income gaps common in craft production
Care Instructions
- Hand wash with mild soap and warm water for longest life and to preserve glaze depth
- Stoneware pieces are dishwasher-safe on the top rack (gentle cycle); earthenware is hand-wash only — check your SKU
- Not suitable for microwave use where metallic-finish glazes are present
- Avoid sudden temperature changes — do not move directly from freezer to oven
- Stack carefully with a soft cloth between pieces to protect glaze surfaces
