Made entirely from hand-felted wool by artisans across Nepal's Kathmandu Valley, our ornament collection is one of the most personal we produce. Every bauble, motif, and seasonal piece is shaped, stitched, and finished entirely by hand — no machines, no shortcuts, no two pieces exactly alike.
Materials Used
- Primary fibre: 100% natural wool, wet-felted or needle-felted by hand depending on the design
- Embroidery details: hand-stitched using cotton or silk thread on select pieces
- Dyes: soft, muted palette using low-impact reactive dyes — colours shown in product images are accurate but may vary slightly between batches
- Standard baubles: 5 cm diameter; larger statement ornaments vary — dimensions noted per product
- Hanging attachment: natural cord or jute loop — no synthetic materials used in any piece
Artisan Story
Felt-making is one of the oldest textile arts in South Asia, and it found a natural home in Nepal's wool-rich hills. Our felt artisans are predominantly women from communities in the Kathmandu Valley, many of whom began working with Sana Hastakala through community outreach programmes in the 1990s and have continued for decades since. The embroidery on each bauble is done freehand — no stencils, no templates. Two artisans working side by side will produce pieces that are similar in form but unmistakably different in detail. That variation is not inconsistency; it is the whole point.
Fair Trade Impact
- Felt production is one of the most home-based-friendly crafts we support — artisans work around childcare and household responsibilities without sacrificing income or employment rights
- Sana Hastakala provides raw wool and dyes at no upfront cost to artisans, eliminating financial risk for the producers
- The ornament line generates consistent pre-Christmas export orders, providing guaranteed income during the October–December peak season when other craft income typically drops
- All artisans are registered with Nepal's social security system through Sana Hastakala's employer contributions
Care Instructions
- Spot clean only using a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap — do not machine wash or submerge in water
- Lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight to preserve colour depth and prevent fibre distortion
- Store in a dry, breathable fabric bag between seasons — avoid plastic storage, which can cause mildew in natural wool fibres
- Keep away from pets and children under 3 years — some ornament designs include small embellishments
- Minor felting and light bobbling with age is normal in natural wool and adds to the handmade character
